How to read these dates
Girivalam is considered most auspicious while the Pournami tithi is in effect. A tithi is a lunar day, the time the moon takes to move 12° ahead of the sun; it varies between roughly 19 and 26 hours. Each row gives the moment the tithi begins and ends in IST. The “Also observed” column notes festivals that fall on or around that full moon in the Tamil calendar. For more detail, read why Girivalam dates span two days.
Planning around a full moon
- Book rooms early. Hotels near the temple and on the Girivalam road fill up on full-moon weekends. See where to stay.
- Expect traffic controls. Most vehicles are kept off the Girivalam road and roads near the temple.
- Travel the day before if the tithi starts early in the morning.
- For dates that matter, confirm against the temple’s notices or a printed panchangam.
Other days for Girivalam
According to the district administration, pilgrims also walk on festival days, the first day of each Tamil month, and Tamil New Year. Many prefer Maha Shivaratri night or simply a quiet weekday morning. See Pournami and night Girivalam.
Common questions
What time should I start Girivalam on Pournami?
Any time after the Pournami tithi begins, finishing before it ends. Most pilgrims start after sunset within the tithi and walk through the night. If the tithi begins in the morning you can walk in the day too, but avoid the midday heat.
Why are Girivalam dates sometimes two days?
A tithi lasts about a day but rarely lines up with the calendar day. When the Pournami tithi starts in the evening and ends the next evening, both dates fall within the Girivalam window.
How accurate are these times?
They are calculated from the positions of the sun and moon for Indian Standard Time. Start dates for 2026 match published Girivalam calendars, and times typically agree with printed panchangams to within a few minutes.
