Where to stay in Tiruvannamalai

Stay near the temple for early darshan, on Chengam Road near the ashrams for a quieter retreat, or on the Girivalam road if the walk is the point of your trip. Book well ahead for Pournami weekends and months ahead for Karthigai Deepam.

Ashram and temple accommodation

  • Sri Ramanasramam provides rooms and South Indian meals to visitors, with stays generally a week or less. Apply to its Accommodation Department via the official website well ahead. See Sri Ramanasramam.
  • Other ashrams and mutts sometimes offer simple rooms to devotees; enquire directly.
  • Temple accommodation: check the official temple website for any temple-run rooms and how to book them.

Booking for Pournami

  • Hotels near the temple and on the Girivalam road fill on full-moon weekends, and prices rise. Check the Pournami calendar before you book.
  • Many places ask for a minimum stay on busy dates.
  • If the tithi starts early in the morning, arrive the day before.

Booking for Karthigai Deepam

  • Book two to three months ahead. Expect premium prices for the whole festival week.
  • For 2026 the festival day is 24 November; see Karthigai Deepam 2026.
  • For 2027, calendars disagree (11 or 12 December), so book flexible dates with free cancellation. See Karthigai Deepam 2027.
  • Staying outside town and travelling in is possible, but private vehicles are stopped on the edge of town on the day.

Booking sensibly

  • Read recent reviews, especially on water supply, cleanliness and noise.
  • Book directly or through a reputable platform. Avoid touts at the bus stand offering rooms “near the temple”.
  • Check the cancellation terms, because festival dates and crowd controls can change your plans.
  • Families: see Girivalam with children and elderly family members for why staying near the route helps.
